Baby X

  • Likes to: Eat, sleep, poop, pee, cry, etc…

Here I shall blog about my relatively regular and insane desire to have a third child (and, maybe, the man who stands in my way.) Why insane, you ask?Β  Here’s why:

A) If it’s a girl, what will I do with her? I hate shopping, can’t tell a tulip from a tu-tu, and have no fashion sense. What on earth would I do with a girl?

B) But it won’t be a girl, for crying out loud, because we can’t all be Aunt Jill and all the other O’Briens make BOYS.Β  Hmmm. I’ve got two, another one makes me like Patricia Heaton in Malcolm in the Middle, or that actress in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.

C) RAS (Rapid Aging Syndrome — MINE!) I’m no spring chicken, and I’m not sure it’s wise to have children when you’ve already had a mid-life crisis. Make that a couple. What could I teach my baby: When I was his/her age Pluto was still a planet. Only one kid in the whole neighborhood had a computer and it was DOS only.

D) I’ve finally got two potty-trained boys, do YOU know how much diapers cost? Not to mention the pain of potty training.

So needless to say Baby X is not here. And may not ever be. At least for now. We’ll see…

Today’s thoughts on this topic. Make that “June’s thoughts” on this topic. No, make that “all summer-long” thoughts on this topic. Crap.

Denny and I read a news article that the rate of twins in the U.S. for women 35+ is increasing. It’s now something like 1 in 30. Does that mean if I try for Baby X at 45+ that I will become octomom? Shudder…

I just found out that Matt’s former speech therapist is expecting! Now I know TWO women having a baby at 35! So maybe I am not too old (or maybe these pregnancies are part of THEIR mid-life crises?). Interesting…

Aaron says I’m like the mom in Malcolm in the Middle. I ask, why is that a bad thing. Kids need a screamy mom every now and then.

A few days ago my partner in crime here in Fort Fun (a.k.a. the woman I had the pregnancy pact with: “Let’s both get pregnant together at the same time. Who cares what our husbands’ think…”) informed me that she doesn’t really think another baby is in the cards for her anymore. She fears she won’t have enough time to get “her body” back before she turns 40. I’m older than her, so I guess that leaves me up s**t creek without a paddle. Good thing that I, too, have been leaning towards the “No way Jose” mentality as of late…

It’s so refreshing to know that I’m not the only one who thinks about these things. (I think you’ve even sparked a new entry for my blog.) Every day I waver between wanting a third and thinking I would need to be institutionalized. When my two are playing together nicely, or listening when I ask them to do something, or sleeping peacefully, I think, “Oh, what would ONE more be like? How would he/she be different, but complete our family?” When they’re biting each other, telling me they’re not going to talk to me anymore, or I’m stressed out in any way, I imagine a third in the picture and decide it is a definite “no.”

Of course, my husband is done, so these daily thoughts on a closed subject are quite hilarious. I guess it’s because despite wanting a second child, ours was definitely not planned at the time he showed up, so I am of the opinion that God is in control of when babies are made instead of my husband or me. So whatever happens over the next however-many fertile years I have, we’ll see who wins. πŸ˜‰

Just do it! Be sure to read the book, “How to Choose the Sex of your baby.” so you can hedge your bets for a baby girl. It is AWESOME! M&N need a baby sister. You won’t regret it! You’re a pro at it by now! (and you are SOOO not too old!).

Is pregnancy in the water right now? Just found out another friend is expecting her third (although she is young… lucky gal!). And another friend who is my age with older children is expecting her third (or fourth, not sure?) in August. Apparently other friends have more willing husbands and partners. And I haven’t really had any coffee yet this morning so I am just spouting aloud and will likely think both of these women are crazy by mid-morning anyway…

I have another friend who is only one year younger than me that just announced she is pregnant with her first child. It gets me thinking… Besides, how will I ever stop myself from babying Matt without having another baby? I just don’t think I can… Have I mentioned that Matt wants younger siblings? And I quote: “Mommy I think you should have a boy & girl in your belly… at the same time.” Twins huh? Of course if I want to ensure one is a girl I would have to do something radical straight out of a soap opera: Like where they are fraternal twins and Denny is the father of the boy, and the girl… well… our postman is kinda hot… πŸ™‚

Folks, I’ll admit I haven’t really thought about baby X. At least not since we “found” that baby under the tree at the Easter egg hunt and Matt insisted we bring it home. Meanwhile, Nate was like “What’s the big deal? It’s a baby.” as he ran off to collect more eggs…

Signs your family is not ready for another baby: Your infant nephew spits up on the rug, and your 7-year-old comes over, takes a whiff, and vomits uncontrollably all over himself. Most of which is pretzel. Whole.

I got to hold a newborn a couple days ago. A friend of mine was borrowing some train tracks for a picture, and I got to hold her sweet little 10-day old son. He was so perfect, so quiet, so adorable. Tick, tock, tick, tock, goes my biological clock! πŸ™‚

I’m going to be officially closing down the “Baby X” column soon, and starting up another column. I’d love it if you’d like to ask me why! πŸ˜‰
